Honda Transmission Fluid Change
Recently purchased a honda accord 2007 v6 with 192,000 miles on it. Was a beater for my son to learn and work on. One of the challenges was the transmission fluid looked original. When reading up on what to do, I learned that we probably should not flush the system, but rather do a drain and fill. The flushing apparently knocks around debris, or cleans off the ‘gunk’ that is currently holding it together, or what I think moves it to a place where it causes problems. When we purchased it, it felt like it would hunt between gears 2 and 3. After the drain and fill it would shift smoothly. Later it started the hunting again. Supposedly you have to do 2 to 3 drain and fills to swap out over 90% of the fluid. However it is not recommended to do it all at once. Therefore we will do it again at the next oil change. Some people recommend a drain and fill every other oil change, but that seems a bit excessive to me.
Also it is important to note that you should only use Genuine Honda transmission fluid, and the right kind for your car. Make sure you use OEM fluid and the right type. For a Honda Accord 2007 and Honda Odyssey 2012 that was this kind:
- Genuine Honda Transmission
- Honda DW-1 Automatic Transmission Fluid, 1 quart, Pack of 4
- Its wide viscosity range provides outstanding protection
