How to Get a Job as a Teenager (or adult even).
Key Points:
- Put on a dress or white shirt and tie with nice slacks.
- Create a one page resume that has your contact information.
- Walk into the place you want to work.
- Ask for the manager on duty.
- Introduce yourself with a firm hand shake and say “I’d like the opportunity to work here.”
- The manager on duty will likely say they are not hiring, but you can apply online.
- Thank the manager on duty and hand over your resume.
- Go apply online.
- Then come back and ask for for the manager on duty again.
- Say that you have applied online and are still interested in working here.
- You will again probably hear that they are not hiring, etc.
- Say that is totally ok, but if something opens up to please give you a call.
- Most often within the next two weeks someone will quit and you’ll be getting a call.
- Do this at ten different work locations.
Alternatively for mowing lawns, walking dogs, etc. do the same thing as above, but make sure you look them in the eyes when they answer the door and state ‘I’d like the opportunity to mow your lawn”. Hand them your business card and thank them for their time.
No matter what the job is, try to find the hiring manager, the person who makes the decision who to hire. It is essential to talk to them. They are super busy and are not normally going to seek you out. It is up to you to seek them out, bug them, and remind them, as they will often forget.
